Dirt Bikes
There are several different types of off-road motorcycle, designed and specialised for specific functions. Off-road motorcycles are often specialized for a variety of off-road motorcycle sports.
MOTOCROSS ~ A race that negotiates a series of jumps and other terrain obstacles. Machines used in motocross racing have small fuel capacities, extensive suspension travel and lack the on-road legal necessities (such as lights, indicators, instruments etc.) common on road motorcycles. Both two- and four-stroke engines are utilized when designing these motorcycles, but typical capacities generally range between 125cc to 500cc with the lower end of the spectrum commonly utilized for youth racing machines. Larger engines are not necessary, as the weight and utility of the power of larger capacities is not needed on such lightweight equipment.
ENDURO ~ A longer-distance competition motorcycle, typically with challenging terrain obstacles. The motorcycles used in enduro racing are very similar to motocross machines, but typically add a bare minimum of on-road legal necessities and additional capacity for carrying fuel.
RALLIE ~The longest distance racing off-road motorcycles. These machines race courses that cover significant mileage over challenging terrain such as forested areas and deserts. Rallie motorcycles typically feature most on-road features as well as significantly more fuel than their motocross and enduro counterparts. Larger engine capacities are also common for these machines, with both two- and four-stroke options available. Capacities commonly range between 450cc and 660cc, and an upper capacity limit is often imposed for rider safety.
TRIAL~ Trial motorcycles are usually customized to race in an extremely specialized form of competition that focuses on balancing skills and precision rather than speed. This racing dictates a lower machine weight and quick power supply, leading to small (125cc to 300cc) engines that are most often two-stroke. Seats are considered unnecessary and are actually regarded as detrimental to the center of gravity on a trial motorcycle. Fuel is kept to a minimum, so this machine typically has a very limited range of operation. Occasionally, this machines are installed with on-road features.
OVAL TRACK ~ Certain high-speed oval track racing dictates the use of a specially modified motorcycle. Such track machines may have no breaks, no suspension, gear limitations (some are restricted to at most two gears) and many are fueled by methanol, which makes them not road legal machines.
These high-revving engines demand superior lubrication to achieve top performance. These machines are often operated in extreme conditions, resulting in high temperatures in dirty and muddy race conditions. Two-stroke engines are subjected to frequent throttle bursts, putting a great deal of strain on the engine. This requires a two-cycle oil that can protect pistons and rings from wear caused by metal-to-metal contact under the harshest of conditions
