ATV's (All Terrain Vehicles)
The term “All-Terrain Vehicle” or “ATV” is used in a general sense to describe any of a number of small open motorized buggies and tricycles designed for off-road use. However, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) defines an ATV as a vehicle that travels on low-pressure tires, with a seat that is straddled by the operator, and with the handlebars for steering control. Rider sit on and operates these vehicles like a motorcycle, but extra wheels give more stability at slow speeds. Although typically equipped with three or four wheels, six wheeled models exist for specialized applications. Engine sizes of ATV’s typically range between 50cc to 800cc. Four-wheeled versions are commonly referred to as “quads”, “four-wheelers” or “ATV’s” om the United States and Canada. In other locales they may be referred to as “quad-bikes” or quad-cycles”. ATV’s can also be considered Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV) or Off-Road Vehicles (ORV), along with some motorcycles, Jeeps and other off-road capable machines. SPORT ATV’s ~ Sport ATV’s are designed for performance over challenging terrain at medium speeds. These models are typically small, lightweight, two-wheel drive vehicles. They are designed to accelerate quickly and usually utilize a manual transmission. By utilizing lightweight components with high output (usually two-stroke) engines, many sport ATV’s are capable of reaching speeds of 90 miles per hour. UTILITY ATV’s ~ Utility ATV’s are designed to offer many of the same towing and cargo carrying capabilities of a small truck with the added benefit of increased maneuverability and the ability to traverse difficult terrain. They are generally bigger four-wheel drive vehicles with a maximum speed of up to 72.5 miles per hour. Most utility ATV’s rely on a four-stroke engine for greater overall power. They have the ability to haul small loads on attached racks or dump beds. They may also tow small trailers. There are six-wheeled versions of the utility ATV that often have a small dump bed that utilizes the extra set of wheels at the back to increase the overall payload capacity. These machines can be either four-wheel drive (back wheels driving only) or six-wheel drive. RACING ATV’s ~ Racing ATV’s are usually modified versions of the sport class ATV’s. To be successful at fast racing trail riding, an ATV must have a low overall weight, high power, good suspension and a low center of gravity. Racing ATV’s are utilized in motocross-style events, woods racing, desert racing, hill climbing, ice racing, speedway competitions, flat track racing, drag racing and other such events. Many manufacturers offer models that are equipped to meet these racing demands direct from the factory. Many ATV manufacturers recommend 10W-40 or 0W-40 (Polaris) as the oil of choice for four stroke liquid-cooled ATVs. However, they also recommend 5W-30 for conditions of 32° F and below, and 20W-50 for temperatures of 100° F and above. AMSOIL provides exceptional products for each of these applications.
